Rightly or wrongly the Commission is considered a rather toothless tiger. Probably this is not entirely justified, there are just so many charities in the country from ultra small to ultra large. There are reckoned to be over 200,000 registered charities in the UK with something like another 5000 being formed every year. There are in fact many more charities turning over less than £5000 per annum who are exempt from registration.

At one time Charities, like limited companies, where set up mainly by upper middle class individuals. As a result it was never considered charities needed much supervision.

There have been several well reported cases in recent years of bodies exploiting their charitable status, so maybe we will see a clampdown on charities before long.
